Jade is a temptation that you are unable to resist. To possess jade is also the best way to concentrate wealth. Jade is the treasure among green gems.

In the dazzling jewelry world, jade ( read “Feicui” in Chinese) is deeply loved by people for its soft, moist, tender and beautiful texture. Moreover, it is worth one hundred times more because the limited producing area and rare production. Its name “Jade” derives from the bird halcyon.  It is said that Fei represents the red bird while Cui represents the green bird. In our country, jade are usually used by wealthy nobles for decoration, wear, furnishings and ornamental use. As the society develops, jade has become a commodity that common people can buy and wear. Jade is also called jadeite in mineralogy and the chemical composition is sodium aluminum silicate. Because there are different amount of impurities in the jade, especially being influenced by the trace amounts of iron and chromium element, the colour of jade differs in thousands ways. The common colours are green, red, yellow, white, purple, grey, black and brown. Usually, the red is called “Fei” while green is called “Cui” and soft, delicate and charming green is considered as the most precious. Therefore, the word “Feicui” in Chinese has almost became the synonym of green, unless specially explained, what we generally say “Feicui” in jewelry industry is the green jade. The green colour is hard to describe as it varies. High quality jade has glossy bright green lustre, glittering and translucent, with a clear loud sound if knocked on. With hard and dense texture, jade is wear-resisting and durable. After polishing, jade is more beautiful in a bright lustre, which can be made into all kinds of delicate accessories, such as rings, earrings and bracelets without color distortion.

Mineralogy characteristics of jade

1. The mineral composition:
Jade is actually a kind of mineral aggregate mainly made up by jadeite minerals, whose chemical composition is NaAlSiO4, often accompanying some other minerals such as feldspar, pyroxene and amphibole, etc.

2. The basic physical properties of jade:
The hardness is 6.5, the density of jade is 3.33 g/cm3 and the refractive index is 1.66 to 1.68.

3. Structure:
Structure refers to the size, shape and mutual relations of composition of mineral particle. The overall structure of jade appears as interlocking texture. The transparency of columnar interlocking texture is poor while fiber interlocking texture is of high transparency. Many of densified fine high-grade jades have the latter structure.

4. Colour:
The colour of jade can be various and the variety of it mainly depends on the type and content of trace elements. For example, the element Cr can be green while Fe elements can be red or violet.

5. Cleavage: (appear as the phenomenon of "the fly wing")
The presentation of jade is a cleavage development and the plane of cleavage is white and flashing like fly wings. Namely, this is the glistening effect, which is a peculiar feature of Jade. It is also one of the most intuitive methods to identify jade, but it is hard to see glistening effect in fine texture of jade.
